Regions/Jammu & Kashmir
Alpine lakes of impossible colour — the most beautiful trekking landscape in India.
Jammu & Kashmir offers some of the most spectacular high-altitude lake treks in the entire Himalayan range. Unlike the forested ridges of Uttarakhand or the stark deserts of Spiti, Kashmir's trekking landscape is defined by sweeping alpine meadows — called margs — and a chain of glacial lakes set in wide, bowl-shaped valleys carved by ancient glaciers. The colours here are extraordinary: emerald greens, deep blues, and turquoise waters against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
The two classic lake circuits — Kashmir Great Lakes and Tarsar Marsar — both depart from the Lidder and Sindh valleys near Pahalgam and Sonamarg respectively. Both are classified as moderate treks, suitable for anyone with prior trekking experience. The trails are well-established, the campsites are beside lakes, and the season window is tight: July to mid-September, when the passes are snow-free and the meadows are in full bloom.
Kashmir treks require local permits and coordination with J&K Tourism. HeyHikers handles all logistics including Srinagar pick-up, government permits, and experienced local guides who know the terrain through every weather window.
Best season: July and August for wildflowers and open passes. September for clear skies and less crowded trails. Treks are not operational before July or after mid-October.
